A swarm is a group of peers that share the same torrent. A swarm differs from seeding, which is the process of one person sharing a torrent by themselves. In some cases, a single torrent can be shared by multiple swarms.
A peer acts as the end-user of BitTorrent, a peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing protocol. Peers can upload or download torrents and share files with each other via BitTorrent. The swarm can only share one file at a time.
BitTorrent is an end-to-end decentralized communications system. There is no single centralized authority, server, or website for the user base. Instead, all users share the torrent files with themselves and can communicate directly, laying the foundation for the decentralized protocol.
